Safety first

Broken down? Make yourself safe, then call.

  1. 01If you can, move to the hard shoulder, an emergency area or a safe place off the road.
  2. 02Switch on your hazard warning lights. Use sidelights too if it’s dark or visibility is poor.
  3. 03Get yourself and any passengers out using the doors facing away from traffic.
  4. 04Wait well away from your vehicle and traffic — behind a safety barrier if there is one.
  5. 05Then call us. If you can’t get out safely or anyone is in danger, call 999 first.

General guidance based on the Highway Code. Your safety always comes before your vehicle.
